Three Steps to the Right Life Insurance Policy

Senior man giving woman piggyback rideA good life insurance policy is one of the best ways to protect your family’s future. But when you’re shopping for a life insurance policy, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by all of your options. How do you know what type of policy is right for you? How much protection should you purchase? Follow these three steps to narrow down your choices, and find the life insurance policy that best protects your loved ones.

Perform a needs analysis. Even if you think you know what type of policy you want, or the amount of coverage you need, perform a needs analysis anyway. You might be surprised at what you discover! This is the best way to get a clear picture of your financial situation and your family’s needs, so that you can choose the appropriate life insurance policy and the right amount of coverage.

Compare policies with several providers. Now that you know what type of policy you need, and you’ve settled on a coverage amount, shop around for policies. Premiums may actually vary more than you would think! This is because the cost of a policy is based on your risk, but different life insurance providers have different ways of calculating that risk. It’s better to find the policy you need at a price you can afford, rather than taking on a large premium and being forced to drop the coverage later.

Reevaluate your needs on a regular basis. Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn’t purchase a life insurance policy and then forget about it. Your family’s needs will probably change over the years, so you need to update your policy to reflect your new priorities. Perform another needs analysis every two to three years, or after any major life changes. Talk to your provider if you feel you need to upgrade to a new policy, or increase your level of coverage. This is the best way to ensure that your family stays protected for the rest of your life.
