Stay Safe When Shopping Online

Whether you’re too busy to hit the mall, or just prefer to avoid crowds and long lines, it’s easy to see why you might prefer shopping from the comfort of your own living room. But online shopping can also be dangerous, because cyber criminals often target innocent shoppers. Take the following steps to keep yourself safe online.

Always update your software. When your computer, tablet, or smart phone asks to install updates, go ahead and take the time to do it. Software developers regularly release updates to fix potential security problems.

Don’t use public wifi. Many public wifi connections are unprotected, and anyone else on the network could view your personal information. Entering credit card numbers and other sensitive info while using a public wifi network can be risky. Do your online shopping from home or another trusted location.

Use safe websites. Check for a lock symbol or “https” in the address bar of any website before entering your personal information. This means that your data will be encrypted to keep it safe from thieves.

Use a credit card for online purchases. If your debit card information is stolen, your bank account could be drained before you even realize there is a problem. Most credit card companies limit your liability in the event of theft, so you won’t be responsible for fraudulent purchases. Check your card company’s policy before using your card online.

Review your credit card statements. Check your statements carefully for unfamiliar purchases, so that you can report problems right away.

Don’t give out more information than seems appropriate for the situation. If someone is asking for your Social Security number online, for example, this is a warning sign that something is not right.

Always remember this rule: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There are plenty of good deals online, but exercise caution with deals that look too good.
